Young Children's Community (Copy)

During the first three years of life the child develops the core of their personality, social skills and values. The Young Children’s Community (YCC) is a Montessori environment specially designed to aid this development in children ages 14 months to 3 years.

Our YCC program is currently full & the next available opening is winter 2022/23.

The first three years of life are the most fundamental to human development. During this period the child develops the core of their personality, social skills and values. The Young Children’s Community (YCC) is a Montessori environment specially designed to aid this development in children ages 14 months to 3 years.

The YCC classroom environment fosters the child’s development and sense of belonging by embracing a natural curiosity of the world beyond the family and encouraging an inner drive for independence. The environment is prepared specifically for young children, outfitted with furnishings appropriate for their size and with Montessori materials that are accessible, attractive, safe and designed to support the child’s success. The safe, loving and gentle atmosphere puts children at ease and nurtures their motor and language development within a social context.

The adults in the YCC, an AMI-trained Guide and Assistant, are dedicated to nurturing each child’s needs with grace, love and understanding. A developmentally appropriate curriculum recognizes that young children learn by doing. Over the course of the YCC program, children are guided through a continuum of lessons and activities that meet their need for variety and challenge them as they grow and learn. The YCC curriculum and environment aid the development of language, speech and fine- and gross-motor skills; foster positive socialization and model grace and courtesy; and allow children to develop and practice control over their bodies as they are encouraged to dress, eat and use the toilet independently.

The YCC program is year-round, Monday through Friday. The morning program ends at 12:15 p.m. and includes a community snack, outdoor time, and community lunch. All food served to the children is prepared in the environment and meets the nutritional needs of the children. Children who stay for the afternoon program nap in the environment.

Upon completion of the YCC program, at around 3 years of age, and at the discretion of the Guide, children move up to our Children’s House program.

To request more information about the YCC program, please complete this inquiry form and someone from our Admissions Office will contact you very soon. Please note, our next available opening in the YCC is winter 2022-2023.
